Daddy's Present

Wondercup!

This is something interesting I found while scanvaging around, now I know what gift to get daddy for father's day.

From TrendHunter:

Australian fashion house AussieBum has created the Wondercup. The Wondercup is the men’s equivalent of a Wonderbra, which means padded underwear to make you appear like more of a man. AussieBum founder Sean Ashby stated, “This design uses all of the natural assets of the person, whether they be big, small or indifferent. It basically lifts, separates and extends.”

From TrendHunter:

Last November, we featured the AussieBum Wonderjock, a range of men’s swimwear designed to “lift and promote” - even when the water is chilly - has been unveiled in Australia.

Local lads label aussieBum has already sold more than 250,000 pairs of its Wonderjock underwear - which features a special posing pouch - and is expecting even bigger things from its swimmers.

“Size really does matter to the modern man, and I think swimwear is where this technology is really needed,’’ aussieBum founder Sean Ashby explained.

“When you walk out of cold water, everything gets sucked up into no- man’sland. This makes the most of what’s still there.’’

Wonderjocks became available on aussieBum’s website only last week, but more than 2000 pairs a day are already being sold - at AUD$32.95 each.

“The Wonderjock was originally done as a bit of a joke after someone said to us, ‘Could you do something that makes me look a bit larger?’ but it just took off,’’ Mr Ashby said.

“Basically, the Wonderjock does for men what the Wonderbra does for women: it lifts and promotes.’’

Wonderjock underwear has been an international success story since its launch in November last year and has been snapped up by stars including Ewan McGregor.

“We found out Ewan was buying them only because he made such a huge order and we had to do a credit check,’’ Mr Ashby said.

Today is Good Friday; mummy is bringing me home for the first time! Daddy came with daddy's younger sister, Auntie Ling Ling, and hubby, uncle Zhuoxing, to fetch mummy and me. Daddy said he will be my personal chauffeur for today! Wow, I have a personal chauffeur! Life is definitely looking good.

Auntie Ling Ling and Uncle Zhuoxing were fussing over me, giving me all the attention a girl could ever get while mummy pack my belongings and daddy proceed to settle our bills and the required paper work.

Daddy came back saying that there were some computer problem and we will have to come back and settle the bill another day, it was now that mummy discovered daddy had forgotten to bring a robe to wrap me all around which grandma had bought specially for today's occasion, so we had to make do with the pink coloured cloth from the hospital. Well, since we have to come back another day, we'll return the cloth then.

We were finally on our way around 12:35 PM. I could still remember daddy saying he'll walk faster ahead because of some parking coupons timing up to 12:25 PM only and its 10 minutes past.

Once we settled down in the car then did daddy explain why grandma and grandpa were not involved in my home coming today. Apparently, great-grandma (daddy's mummy's mummy) pass on last night, grandma and grandpa are attending her wake and so could not see me until the wake was over.

Great-grandma had stomach cancel and was in constant pain; she also suffered from memory loss and could not remember anyone. She was having problem eating for a while and last night, while drinking, she choke and was sent to the hospital where it was announced that she had pass on peacefully.

It is perhaps better this way as she is no longer suffering now; I know she will be looking out for me from heaven.

After half an hour of driving, we reached our destination, my home sweet home. Great-grandma (Daddy's daddy's mummy), auntie Yuehua (the auntie that is looking after mummy and me till I'm 1 month old) and Arnie (our maid) were all waiting for us.

Great-grandma had auntie Yuehua performed some special routine before putting me in my beautiful cot where I lay half asleep looking at daddy and mummy getting ready auntie Ling Ling's room for auntie Yuehua during her stay with us.

Yawn... Good night everyone and World Peace.

Mummy is to be admitted tonight at 11 pm and prepare for my arrival tomorrow, this is by order from our man in white who said I am "over due" and he has to perform an induce labour on mummy.

Daddy did a search on some netting and found that a labour might need to be induced if the risks of prolonging mummy's pregnancy are higher than the risks of delivering me right away.

The most common reasons for this include:
  • Mummy's water breaks and the labour don’t start on its own within a reasonable amount of time. (Exactly how long that is will depend on my man in white and mummy's particular situation)
  • Mummy is still pregnant one to two weeks past my due date. Most men in whites won't let mummy wait longer than that to give birth because it puts mummy and me at greater risk for a host of problems. For example, it's more likely mummy will develop an infection in her uterus that could be dangerous for me, or that mummy's placenta will stop functioning properly, which could threaten my life or gives me serious birth problems. What's more, mummy's labour is more likely to be prolonged or stalled, both mummy and I have an increased risk of injury during a vaginal delivery, and mummy's chances of needing a c-section are higher.
  • Tests show that, for whatever reason, mummy's placenta isn't functioning properly, mummy has too little amniotic fluid, or I am not thriving or growing as I should.
  • Mummy develops preeclampsia, a serious condition that can endanger her health and restrict the flow of blood to me.
  • Mummy has a chronic or acute illness — such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease — that threatens her health or mine.
  • Mummy previously had a full-term stillbirth.
For my case it is reason number 2. Remember? Our man in white said I'm due on the 2nd April 2007, Monday. (Refer to Sunday 25th March 2007 - Label: DOB)

At 4 pm, mummy called daddy while he was working and told him she's in great pain and believes that I'm on my way. Faster than a screaming bullet breaking all sound barriers possible, daddy reached home at... 5pm and sent mummy to the hospital where our man in white immediately attach several patches hooked up to his toys with lots of beeping noises to say: "There are no signs of contraction, this is a false alarm, see you tonight 11 pm." ......

The date is 3rd April 2007, Tuesday. The time is 5:48 pm. Gotcha daddy!

More on Induce Labour.
- Courtesy extract from Baby Center.

What are some of the techniques used to induce labor?

The methods your practitioner would use to induce labor depend on the condition of your cervix at the time. If your cervix hasn't started to soften, efface (thin out), or dilate (open up), it's considered "unripe," or not yet ready for labor. In that case, your practitioner would use either hormones or "mechanical" methods to ripen your cervix before the induction. Sometimes these procedures end up jump-starting your labor as well.

Some of the methods used to ripen the cervix and induce labor are:
  • Stripping or sweeping the membranes
    • If your cervix is already somewhat dilated, your practitioner can insert her finger through it and manually separate your bag of waters from the lower part of your uterus. This causes the release of hormones called prostaglandins, which may help further ripen your cervix and possibly get contractions going. In most cases, this procedure is done during an office visit. You're then sent home to wait for labor to start, usually within the next few days. Many moms-to-be find this procedure uncomfortable or even painful, though the discomfort is short-lived.
  • Using prostaglandin medications
    • Your practitioner may try to ripen your cervix by inserting medication that contains prostaglandins into your vagina. This medication may also stimulate contractions — sometimes enough to jump-start your labor.
  • Using a Foley catheter
    • Your practitioner may insert a catheter with a very small uninflated balloon at the end of it into your cervix. When the balloon is inflated with water, it puts pressure on your cervix, stimulating the release of prostaglandins, which cause the cervix to open and soften. When your cervix begins to dilate, the balloon falls out and the catheter is removed.
  • Rupturing the membranes
    • If your cervix is at least a few centimeters dilated, your practitioner can insert a small, plastic hooked instrument into it and break your bag of waters. This procedure causes no more discomfort than a vaginal exam. If your cervix is very ripe and ready for labor, there's a small chance that this alone might be enough to get your contractions going. If that doesn't happen, your practitioner will give you the drug oxytocin (Pitocin) through an IV. Once your water has broken, most practitioners will want you to deliver within the next 12 to 24 hours because the risk of infection for you and your baby increases over time.
  • Using Pitocin
    • Pitocin is a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin, which your body naturally produces during labor. Your practitioner may give you this drug through an IV pump to start or augment your contractions. She can adjust the amount you need according to how your labor progresses.

What risks are associated with inducing labor?

The primary risk you face if you're induced is that the induction won't work and you'll need a cesarean. The process of ripening the cervix and then inducing labor with oxytocin can take a long time. If you still haven't gone into labor after 24 to 48 hours, your practitioner may consider it a failed attempt and you'll have to deliver by c-section. This process can be very hard psychologically on you and your partner. What's more, having a c-section after a failed induction is associated with higher rates of complications, especially infection, and longer hospital stays.

In addition, certain techniques, including using Pitocin, prostaglandins, or nipple stimulation, occasionally hyperstimulate the uterus (meaning you have contractions that come too often or are abnormally long and strong), which in turn can stress your baby. In rare cases, prostaglandins or Pitocin also cause placental abruption or even uterine rupture, though ruptures are extremely rare in women who've never had a c-section or other uterine surgery. (Prostaglandins are associated with a relatively high rate of rupture in women attempting a vaginal birth after a cesarean (VBAC), so they should never be used if that's the case. And some experts don't think women attempting VBAC should be induced with Pitocin, either.)

To assess both the frequency and length of your contractions as well as your baby's heart rate, you'll need to have continuous electronic monitoring during an induced labor. In most cases you have to lie or sit while being monitored, but some hospitals offer telemetry, which lets you walk around during the process.

Remember that your practitioner will recommend inducing your labor only when she believes that the risks to you and your baby of waiting for labor to begin on its own are higher than the risks of intervening.

Are there any circumstances in which my labor shouldn't be induced?
Yes. You'll need to have a c-section rather than a labor induction whenever it would be unsafe to labor and deliver vaginally, including the following situations:

  • Tests indicate that your baby needs to be delivered immediately or can't tolerate contractions.
  • You have a placenta previa; you have a vasa previa (when blood vessels from the umbilical cord are embedded in the amniotic membranes and at risk for rupture during labor); or the cord is lying in front of your baby's head and could be compressed as his head enters the birth canal or prolapse through your cervix when your water breaks.
  • Your baby is in a breech or transverse position, meaning that he's not coming head-first.
  • You've had more than one c-section. (Some practitioners believe that women with even one previous c-section shouldn't be induced.)
  • You had a previous c-section with a "classical" (vertical) uterine incision or other uterine surgery, such as a myomectomy (surgery to remove fibroids).
  • You're having twins and the first baby is breech, or you're having triplets or more.

Are there any techniques I can try myself at home to get my labor going?

No do-it-yourself methods have been proven consistently to be both safe and effective. Here's the scoop on some of the techniques you may have heard about:

  • Nipple stimulation: Twisting or pinching your nipples releases your own natural oxytocin. A few studies have found it to be effective in getting labor going within 72 hours if your cervix is already ripe, but the method has not been well studied. And don't try it at home: Nipple stimulation requires monitoring because it can sometimes cause prolonged contractions that could stress your baby and depress his heart rate.
  • Sexual intercourse: Semen contains some prostaglandin and having an orgasm may stimulate a few contractions, but having sex won't induce labor.
  • Castor oil: Castor oil is a strong laxative, and stimulating your bowels may cause some contractions, but no good studies have proven it consistently effective, and you're likely to find the effect on your gut very unpleasant.
  • Herbal remedies. A variety of herbs are touted as useful for labor induction. Some are risky because they can hyperstimulate your uterus (and may be unsafe for your baby for other reasons as well), and the safety and effectiveness of others remains unproven.

I did an April fool's on my mummy and daddy this morning!

You see, Sunday, April 1st this year was the day our family’s yearly visit to my great-grandpa's resting place; to pay respect, burn paper money, clothing and daily household stuffs so that my great-grandpa can have new cloths, more money to spend and a nice tooth brush.

The plan was for everyone to gather by 5 am, have a quick breakfast and set off at 5:30 am to reach grandpa by 6:30 am latest; setup the food and tea, everyone take turn to pay their respect, burn the offerings and be back by 10 am. My mummy was excused because of me; daddy will be going if mummy sleeps soundly throughout the night.

I’ve been a good girl and taking good care of mummy, so that mummy can be as comfortable as possible while she is at work, therefore mummy’s pregnancy had been real smooth all this while, our last check up yesterday indicates that there was no signs of contraction leading to man in white asking my mum to check in earlier on Tuesday night 11 pm to prepare to deliver me on 4th April, Wednesday.

Everything was going as planed, mummy slept soundly the whole night, and daddy had woken up at 4:30 am and freshens up by 5, all ready for the trip. It was time to execute my plan…

Daddy was just kissing mummy goodbye and preparing to leave the room when mummy suddenly experience sudden pain in the stomach and had red discharge, boy was daddy panicking like an ant on a heated pot.

Great-grandma sends grandpa, grandma and auntie off for their trip and ordered my daddy to standby sending my mummy to the hospital. Mummy pain has just increased and there were more red discharge, daddy managed to get a hold on himself and got mummy to phone the hospital for advice, while he rush around checking the items previously prepared for this day.

Daddy managed to get someone from the maternity ward on the line and got mummy to describe what she just went through as well as answering questions on her conditions. The reply was either getting admitted now for a check or wait for a more regular pain pattern. Mummy opted for waiting...

Daddy, having clamed down now, was quick to guess that it was just me up to my tricks, he was telling mummy to relax and go back to sleep, while he assure grand-grandma and Arnie (a very nice auntie who would be taking care of me in future while mummy and daddy goes to work) that it’s a false alarm and mummy do not need to be admitted now. Both whom were very certain that the pain and discharge are signs of my forth coming.

Everyone settled down, mummy went back to sleep peacefully and even daddy managed to catch some rest.

Heh heh, daddy was still keeping a close watch as mummy slumber into dream land, despite assuring everyone mummy is alright, daddy was definitely not taking any chances.
Got you daddy, April’s Fool!

Sorry Great-grandpa, daddy was not able to visit you, rest assured, we would all be visiting you next year! Thank you for watching over my mummy and daddy and everyone in the family.

Great-grandpa is definitely having a great time in heaven.
